Media Studies

Media Studies has been a popular GCSE option subject at Bradfield School for what is now approaching two decades. It regularly attracts between forty and sixty students each year, and for many of them, it becomes their favourite subject. The main reason for this may be that the subject is relevant to teenagers' lives in a way that can be pursued beyond GCSE, such as photography, marketing, advertising and work in film and television.
Media Studies in Bradfield School is taught by Mr K Harrison (Subject Leader) and Ms T Snailum. The subject has undergone enormous change since it's inception; the biggest change being brought about by the growth of ICT in school. For example, twelve years ago, marketing a film might involve drawing a poster and a billboard by hand, then handwriting an evaluative report. Though these are still options of course, it is more likely now that students will produce high quality designs using a variety of software packages, and desk top publishing.
A designated Media Studies room is also being developed, which houses a bank of laptops and a selection of digital cameras and camcorders. The laptops are equipped with 'Pinnacle' software which enables students to edit their own films. Obviously, having access to this type of equipment and these activities should ensure Media Studies maintains both its relevance to students, and its popularity, for years to come.
