Levels Explained
There are now two different levels of entry for GCSE in Mathematics. This is to enable students to work at a rate which is appropriate for their level of ability.
Foundation Level is for students in our lower sets and will enable them to achieve grades C, D, E, F and G.
At the Higher Level, grades A*, A, B, C and D are available.
This course has a higher algebra content and is appropriate for those students who are capable of at least a good level C, perhaps intending to study Mathematics at A level.
Please note that we have to be very careful not to enter a students for a level which is too difficult for them. If they fail toa chieve the lowest grade at their level, then they get an "Unclassified" grade or "U".
BE ASSURED THAT NO DECISIONS ABOUT LEVEL OF ENTRY ARE MADE UNTIL YEAR 11.
What is involved in GCSE Maths?
We use the AQA linear mathematics course for GCSE. This has two final exams, worth 40% each. In addition, there are two pieces of coursework, each worth 10% of the overall mark. One is an investigation and the other is a statistical study.
At Bradfield, we do both coursework pieces in Year 11, when the students are more confident mathematicians.
An Overview of Year 10
There a a few pressure points to be aware of this year. We will have formal tests at the end of each term. These allow us to check that you are in the correct set, at the same time they allow you to look for areas you need to improve upon.
Please note that all of the questions used in tests will be from past GCSE exam papers.
In the Summer term we will have a practice GCSE investigation. This will give you a clear idea of what will be required in Year 11.
Setting Targets for the Future
If we look at Y9 SATs levels, we can see what recent Bradfield pupils at each level achieved when they moved on to GCSE.
